Established in 1877, the Illinois State Bar Association provides support to Illinois lawyers and advocates for the improvement in the governance of justice. Through its charity arm, Illinois Bar Foundation (IBF), the Association partnered with ISBA Mutual Insurance Company in launching the ISBA Mutual Giving Circle, to allow ISBA Mutual policyholders to contribute part or all of their dividends directly to the Foundation.
The ISBA Mutual Giving Circle initiative aims to advance equal justice by funding the civil aid programs of the Foundation. Part of the funds will also go directly towards helping lawyers who, because of age or illness, are unable to support themselves and their families. In 2018, IBF contributed $240,000 to 33 legal aid organizations that take pro bono cases as well as $35,000 in startup funding to Free Legacy Answers, a program initiated by the Illinois Legal Aid Online to increase access to justice.
